  • The Dutch steamer SS Batavier V strikes a mine planted by German submarine UC-6 in the North Sea. Within three minutes the ship’s decks are awash and cargo is strewn everywhere. Twenty minutes later the vessel sinks; three crewmembers and one American passenger die.
