  • The British submarine E-19 sinks the German cruiser SMS Undine in the Baltic Sea, killing 14 men. SMS Undine 98th Anniversary Dive
  • The German submarine U-38 torpedoes and sinks the Italian passenger steamer Ancona off the coast of Tunisia. More than 200 people perish. The attack is without warning, and given that Germany is not yet at war with Italy, the incident sparks international outrage.
