  • The US Navy armoured cruiser USS North Carolina becomes the first warship to launch an aircraft by catapult, launching a Curtiss AB-2 flying boat piloted by Lieutenant Commander Henry Mustin over her stern. This led to the use of catapults on battleships and cruisers in World War II, and to the steam catapults employed on modern aircraft carriers today.
  • The German submarine U-35 bombards the village of Sollum on the coast of Western Egypt, sinking HMS Tara, the Egyptian coastguard gun-boat Prince Abbas and badly damaging Nur el Bahr.
