  • Day 305 of the war
  • As summer sets in on the Gallipoli Peninsula, more men are evacuated suffering from disease as opposed to wounds. Flies are a major issue, transmitting dysentery and other diseases through the trenches. Water is in short supply and is reserved for drinking, not washing or cleaning. Sergeant Lawrence of the Australian Engineers notes in his diary:

Rose about 6.45am and had a shave and a wash. The latter is accomplished by damping one end of the towel in water and that serves for the day.
