  • The Leader reports that Minister of Defence, Senator George Foster Pearce, has announced that the height standard for new recruits has been lowered by one inch to 5ft 3in. He estimates that Australia needs to contribute 5,300 men per month to maintain reinforcements. Appeal to Australians
  • Allied forces attempt to capture Krithia at Gallipoli for the third time. Despite breaking through Turkish lines, the Allies are unable to capitalise on their position, and suffer some 6,500 casualties, all for the gain of a few hundred yards territory. The Turks suffer more than 9,000 dead and wounded.
