- General Sir John Maxwell takes over the command of British forces in Egypt
- The Second Battle of Lemberg begins. The Battle lasts three days, concluding on 11 September.
- The Battle of the Drina begins. Austrian forces mount a second attack on Serbia. Despite ten days of fierce fighting the Serbs are unable to push the Austrians out of their bridgeheads, and withdraw to form another line of defence before Belgrade, which falls to the Austrians on 2 December.
