- British and Canadian forces launch a final assault on the ruined village of Passchendaele. The 27th Canadian Battalion (City of Winnipeg) succeeds in capturing the village amid heavy fighting.
- The Bolsheviks, led by Trotsky and Lenin, begin the overthrow of the Russian government; the collapse of the government would prove to be a major turning point of the war.
