  • The Battle of Gueudecourt begins in northern France. The Australian 1st Battalion are engaged in battle in treacherous conditions on waterlogged ground. Fighting continues until 14 November.
  • French troops occupy the whole of Vaux at Verdun. They capture most of Saillisel and attack St Pierre Vaast Wood
  • British soldiers make some progress at the Butte de Warlencourt and attack at Le Transloy
  • Austro-Hungarian forces succeed south-west of Predeal Pass and south-east of Roter Turm Pass in western Transylvania
  • Germany and Austria declare Poland to be “an independent state”
