  • French pilot Adolphe Pegoud shoots down two German planes on the Western Front, forcing a third to make an emergency landing. Nicknamed roi du ciel (king of the sky), Pegoud explored the limits of airplane manoeuvrability. He is credited with being the first person to perform an upside down loop, and the first to parachute from a plane. He would be killed in action in August 1915, shot down by a former student.
