  • The Australian Light Horse, New Zealand mounted forces and British infantry clash with Turkish troops near the Egyptian town of Romani, 37km east of the Suez Canal. The Allies succeed in retaking the Sinai Peninsula, ending the Turkish threat to the Suez Canal and signalling the beginning of a bolder offensive strategy against Ottoman forces in Palestine and the Middle East. The three-day long Battle of Romani costs the Allies 1,202 casualties, including nearly 300 dead. The ANZAC mounted troops take the brunt of the Turkish assault with 900 casualties. Turkish casualties number 9,200, including 4,000 prisoners.
