  • The British 53rd Brigade attack and capture most of Schwaben Redoubt on the crest of Thiepval Plateau. They advance to the north and north-east of Courcelette, between Martinpuich and Gueudecourt.
  • French forces make progress between Fregicourt and Morval
  • German submarine SM U-45 torpedoes and sinks the British fishing trawler Fuschia in the North Sea. The Fuschia‘s nine crew are taken prisoner of war.
