  • The Italian cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi is torpedoed by Austrian submarine U-4 off the coast of Albania. The Italian cruiser was sailing to bombard a railway bridge when she was hit by two torpedoes amidships which sank her in three minutes, with the loss of 53 lives.
  • The Second Battle of the Isonzo is launched along the Isonzo river in north-eastern Italy. Fighting between Italy and Austria-Hungary continues until 3 August, when both sides run out of ammunition. Total casualties amount to 91,000 men; 43,000 Italians and 48,000 Austro-Hungarians. This is the second in a series of twelve Battles of the Isonzo fought during the course of the war.
