  • The evacuation of troops from Gallipoli continues. Sergeant Lawrence of the Australian Engineers notes in his diary:

This afternoon a large parcel of mail arrived. Xmas mail. It’s a jolly shame they did not keep it, because half the boys have gone. Puddings, cakes, sweets, tobacco, chocolate, toffee, butterscotch, pipes, handkerchiefs, sox in dozens. Such a food supply has never been seen here before.

  • Russian troops under the command of General Nikolai Nikolaevich Baratov occupy the city of Hamadan in western Persia (modern day Iran). The city would later be occupied by both Russian and Turko-German forces. It was also occupied by the British, before returning to the control of the Persian government at the conclusion of the war.
