  • German Chancellor, Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg, sends a peace missive to the Allies offering to open talks in a neutral country. The missive is rejected and the war continues.
  • General Joseph Jacques Cesaire Joffre is dismissed as Commander-in-Chief of the French Army. He is replaced by General Robert Georges Nivelle, who is appointed Commander-in-Chief of Northern and North-Eastern Groups of Armies. General Joffre is appointed Technical Military Adviser to the War Cabinet. Nivelle replaces Joffre as French commander
  • Sir Edward Henry Carson succeeds Arthur James Balfour as First Lord of the Admiralty
  • Vice-Admiral Dominique-Marie Gauchet succeeds Admiral Louis Dartige du Fournet as Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet
