  • French General Ferdinand Foch becomes General in Chief of all the Allied armies in France
  • The 4th Australian Brigade blocks the German offensive at Hebuterne, Denancourt, Morlancourt and Villers-Bretonneux
  • New Zealand troops are deployed to the Somme to fill the gap torn in the Allied front by the German Spring Offensive. They repulse a series of German attacks and are successful in holding the line.
  • American troops in France now number a quarter of a million; a further 250,000 will arrive each month until the end of the war
