  • A second British attempt to relieve besieged forces at Kut-al-Amara in Mesopotamia is repulsed at Dujaila Redoubt and Es-Sinn. The Anglo-Indian relief force, led by Lieutenant-General Fenton Aylmer, loses 4,000 men in the Battle of Dulaila.
  • French forces regain ground in Corbeaux Wood, north-east of Mort Homme in the Battle of Verdun
  • Russian forces occupy Sennah in Persia
