  • George Campbell enlists. George is commemorated on the Centenary of WWI in Orange Honour Roll; he would be killed in action in Belgium on 30 September 1917.
  • German submarine U-66 torpedoes and sinks the Spanish cargo boat SS Santanderino in the Atlantic Ocean 18 miles off the French island of Ouessant. Four of her twenty crew drown; the survivors are rescued by a Norwegian merchant ship. Santanderino was en route from Liverpool to Havana at the time of the attack.
  • German forces seize Bethincourt in the Battle of Verdun
