  • Residents of Shadforth gather at the local hall to farewell Charles Gordon Russell Rodwell on the eve of his departure for the front. Private Rodwell is presented with a silver wristlet watch and a silver mounted cigarette holder. Shadforth
  • A dance is held at the Oddfellows’ Hall as a send-off for Jack Hilton West. “The ladies” provide “a delightful supper”, and dancing continues to “the wee small hours”. Farewell to Jack West
  • German forces at Verdun initiate another attack on the west bank of the Meuse River. They secure the advantage and within three days capture Cote 304, thus achieving a solid position northwest of Verdun.
