- The Military Service Act of 27 January 1916 is extended to include the conscription of married men. In addition, the minimum age for conscription is reduced from 19 to 18. The May 1916 extension of the Military Service Act
- The infantry battle for Buole Pass begins in the Trentino district of northern Italy. The battle lasts six days.
- German forces attack between Haudromont Wood and Thiaumont Farm in the Battle of Verdun
- More than 25,000 Nyasaland-Rhodesia Field Force soldiers under the commander of Brigadier General Edward Northey begin their advance into German East Africa. As German troops retreat they occupy Same, Rufu Lager, Lembeni, and Ngulu
