  • The First Battle of Ypres ends. Over 5,000 British and 5,000 German soldiers are killed during the month-long battle.
  • The War Office assumes control of British operations in East Africa
  • British troops defeat Ottoman forces and capture Basra in Mesopotamia at the head of the Persian Gulf, safeguarding the supply of Persian oil
  • Keuprikeui in Armenia is again taken by Russian forces. Russia had seized the town on 6 September, but lost it to Turkey on 14 November.
