  • Thomas Reuben Haydon enlists. Thomas is commemorated on the Centenary of WWI in Orange Honour Roll; he would die of disease in Belgium on 6 February 1919, almost three months after the end of the war
  • Five Austro-Hungarian destroyers attack HM ships Jackal and Hornet in the Otranto Strait, putting Hornet out of action and damaging Jackal, before turning and making off at high speed. The Australian destroyer HMAS Torrens pursues the enemy ships until 3 am, when the chase is abandoned.
  • The Leader reports that recently retired mayor, Alderman Edwin Thomas McNeilly, has raised almost £30,000 pounds for the war effort. Appreciation of Patriotic Work
