  • John Simpson Kirkpatrick – The Man with the Donkey – is killed in action. A stretcher bearer in the 3rd Field Ambulance, Simpson employed donkeys to transport the wounded to safety, braving “deadly sniping down the valley and the most furious shrapnel fire”, according to Charles Bean.
