  • General Sir Douglas Haig replaces Field Marshal Sir John French as Commander in Chief of the British Expeditionary Force in France and Belgium. The controversial Haig concentrates the war effort on the Western Front; it is here that he believes that the war will be decided.
  • Intense artillery activity on the Western front. The Germans use phosgene gas for the first time in battle north of Ypres, killing 120 British soldiers.
