- Norman Douglas Sherwin enlists. Norman is commemorated on the Centenary of WWI in Orange Honour Roll; he would die of wounds on 29 March 1918 whilst a prisoner of war.
- HMA Submarine AE1 is lost off New Guinea
- Reims is evacuated by German forces
- General Helmuth von Moltke resigns as Chief of the General Staff of the German Field Armies in France and Belgium. He is replaced by General Erich von Falkenhayn
