- British troops capture Mametz Wood and Contalmaison on the Somme
- British troops repulse German raids west of Wytschaete, near Messines, and the area south of La Bassee Canal
- French troops make a successful raid in Champagne
- The German submarine SM UB-39 sinks two British trawlers and two fishing boats in the North Sea off the coast of Whitby. All crew members of the Dalhousie, Florence, Mary Ann and Success survive the attacks.
