  • Herman Henry Frank Soltau enlists. Herman is commemorated on the Centenary of WWI in Orange Honour Roll; he would be killed in action in France on 6 May 1917.
  • British and French ships begin to transport Serbian troops from Corfu to Salonika to augment the Allied force there
  • A German attack on Douaumont-Vaux fails in the Battle of Verdun
  • German losses since the beginning of the war now number more than 2.7 million
  • Portuguese troops capture Kionga in German East Africa
