  • General Victor Deguise, military governor of the Belgian city of Antwerp formally surrenders to Germany. German forces continued to occupy Antwerp for the duration of the war. The city was finally liberated in late 1918.
  • The French towns of Hazebrouck and Estaires are seized by British forces
  • The Battle of La Bassée begins in northern France. The fighting between German and Franco-British forces lasts until 2 November.
