  • The Third Battle of Ypres ends on the Western Front following more than three months of fierce combat in a series of conflicts that fail to create any substantial breakthrough. Australian forces participated in the battles of Menin Road, Polygon Wood, Broodseinde, Poelcapelle and the First Battle of Passchendaele, sustaining 38,000 casualties in eight weeks.   • The Battle of Caporetto (also known as the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo) ends near the town of Kobarid (in what is now north-western Slovenia). The Italian Army is heavily defeated by Austro-Hungarian and German forces after three weeks of fighting.
