  • British forces have captured 266 officers, 15,203 men, 86 guns and 160 machine guns since the Battle of the Somme started on 1 July
  • Kaiser Wilhelm appoints Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg as Germany’s new Chief of the General Staff, replacing Erich Falkenhayn. The change in military leadership is welcomed by the German public; German casualties are approaching 250,000 and ground is being lost on the Western Front. Allied naval blockades are causing food shortages in Germany, resulting in the rationing of bread, meat, sugar, eggs and milk. German morale is at all-time low since the beginning of the war.
