  • The Sixth Battle of the Isonzo, begins in north-eastern Italy. Italian troops advance and capture the town of Gorizia; fighting continues until 17 August. Also known as the Battle of Gorizia, this battle is the most successful of the eleven Italian offensives along the Isonzo River and greatly boosts Italian morale. Italy casualties number 51,000 including 21,000 dead; Austria-Hungary 41,835 with 8,000 dead
